Brake rubs or scrapes when riding
A rhythmic rubbing sound means the disc touches a pad. Usually the caliper needs centring.
Is this your problem?
- Swish or scrape once per wheel turn
- Wheel does not spin freely
- Range dropped
Likely causes
Lift the wheel, spin it, and watch the gap between disc and pads from above with a torch.

Step by step

- Loosen the two caliper bolts
Just enough so the caliper can slide sideways.
- Squeeze the brake and hold it
The pads clamp the disc and pull the caliper into line.
- Tighten the bolts while holding the lever
Tighten each a little at a time, then release the lever and spin the wheel.
- Small wobble in the disc?
A very slightly bent disc can be trued carefully by hand. A clearly bent disc should be replaced (120 mm, same bolt pattern).
Stay safe
- Brakes rubbing hard can overheat and lose power. Fix before a long ride.

If a piston is stuck, or the disc is badly bent.
