Clunk or knock over bumps

A knock from the front or rear over bumps is usually a loose rocker-arm pivot bolt.

Check this first

Lift the wheel and push it up and down, then side to side. Watch the pivot for movement.

A metric set, roughly 2 mm to 8 mm. Long-arm keys reach the recessed bolts on the stem and deck.

Medium strength, often sold as "blue". Stops bolts shaking loose but can still be undone with hand tools. Not the red, permanent kind.

Step by step

Tap a step when it’s done to keep your place.

  1. Find the pivot

    At the top end of each orange rocker arm, behind a big round cap.

  2. Tighten the pivot bolt

    Hold one side, tighten the other. Firm, but the arm must still move freely afterwards: over-tight pivots bind and make the ride harsh.

  3. Use threadlocker if it keeps loosening

    Take the bolt out, clean it, add a drop of medium (blue) threadlocker, refit.

  4. Look at the elastomer

    The rubber block at the rocker. Cracks, crumbs of rubber or a gap where it used to touch mean it needs replacing.

Stay safe

  • Do not ride with a wheel that moves sideways.
