What are .io games?
.io games are simple online games, usually about growing, surviving and climbing a leaderboard.
The name
Many of the first ones used web addresses ending in .io, the domain for the British Indian Ocean Territory, which became popular with tech sites. The name stuck to the whole style of game.
How they play
You start small and weak in a big shared arena. Eat, collect or defeat things to grow. Get too careless and you are back to the start. A round can last a minute or an hour.
Real people or bots?
Some play against real people online. Many fill the arena with computer players made to look like people, so the game is never empty. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is worth knowing.
